Extended hours and days highlights this year’s event

“Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most.”

 Welcome to the Christmas season.

The 2017 Apopka Festival of Trees illuminates the holidays with an official Opening Day Ceremony on Sunday at 5:30 PM, at the Apopka City Hall (120 E. Main Street). Admission is free.  A tree-lighting ceremony will be held at dusk.

The 14th Annual Festival features special holiday decorations, music, carolers from the Apopka High School Chorus, a bake sale, and Santa Claus.

And the main event for two weeks will be a spectacular display of trees, which will be at City Hall through December 17th.

The trees will be sold at a silent auction starting at 5:30 p.m on December 17th. Interested bidders can sign up at each tree location in the City Hall atrium. Proceeds will benefit the Apopka Historical Society, custodian of the Museum of the Apopkans, 122 East Fifth Street.

Sunday’s kick-off lighting ceremony will include a visit from Santa Claus, who will read the children’s classic, “The Night Before Christmas.”

  1. I am checking out the super moon tonight. I went outside and looked to the east, and it is very bright, but it is not very big at all. Then I walked around out front, and looked at my Christmas lights, and then I heard a owl hooting over in my neighbor’s big oak tree. The owl must could see extra good with the bright moon tonight, and was looking for something to get, I suppose. I didn’t feel any mosquitoes biting, so I guess the mosquito fogger they sent around here on this street a couple of nights ago, must be helping. It was the truck fogger, and not the aerial spraying like before. I think this super moon is suppose to get bigger later on tonight, or before daybreak. It is not as big as a moon I saw back in October, over the Family Dollar on RS Road, that was huge and orange……so beautiful.

  2. These owls are showing up and hooting because they don’t have all the woods like they used to have. It is only going to get worse for the wildlife and the traffic. I was on Piedmont Wekiva Road leaving Walmart the other night, and heading north and OMG, it was shortly after dark, and it was a total race track! I can only guess as to what the future will hold around this town with more traffic…..it won’t be safe to leave the house. The authorities need to do something about putting some barriers around that retention pond at Piedmont Wekiva Road and 436! That is extremely dangerous, if a car careens into that waterway…..why do the authorities ignore the potential danger there??? Does someone have to die there first to get something done???

  3. I see they are going to have a little gathering in the Wekiva Spring Park right before Christmas after dark, on the slope down to the springs, and have Christmas carols, and the concession stand open for hot chocolate, and coffee. Bring your own flashlights, blankets, chairs, etc. I’ll have to see what date it is again. I have heard of it before, but might go this year, never been, if I can take my little pooch with me, that is.

  4. I decided to make a red velvet cake, with cream cheese icing, with crushed peppermint candy on top of the icing. I couldn’t resist. I will make it this week, as I have to go get a few more things I’ll need to bake it. Life is too short, not to have the simple things, you really want, but don’t truly need. My Mama used to make divinity sea foam candy, fudge, Hershey Bar Cakes, fruitcakes, fruit salad, coconut cakes, and always had hard candy sitting around in glass jars on the coffee table, oranges, tangerines, nuts, and all of that stuff sitting around at Christmas time. Plus Poppycock with pecans too, Christmas cookies, and chocolate candies. I am serious! Honestly, it is a wonder I didn’t pass out with hyperglycemia, or sugar overload. I didn’t have a clue, at that time, I had diabetes. I didn’t know, until after I had pneumonia and thought I was going to die, I was so sick, and was diagnosed shortly afterwards with diabetes.

  5. One kind of cake I really love is one my Mama didn’t make, but she would have, if she had of known about them, and I got one at Publix bakery once, and I was hooked. It was the Italian Rum cake with Cream Cheese Icing with Almond Slivers on top….delicious! The bakery clerk said that they don’t have them all the time, but only sometimes… I also like the Italian Wedding Soup, that I had one time somewhere, it was so good! My Mama made a mean pineapple upside down cake that would melt in your mouth! You know I am bad off, when I am sitting here obsessing about sweets…..

  6. I’m sure the Festival of the Trees must look really pretty lit up there at City Hall atrium in the dark, with the lights off, or dimmed low. Coming through town the other night, I saw the decorations on the poles for the first time, lit at night this year. They looked really nice. When I was a kid, all the towns used to string the Christmas lights across the roads, but I think most all the towns stopped doing that, as they claimed it confused people driving and they couldn’t see the red lights, in order to stop, because of the Christmas lights in multiple strands all the way through the main drags. Way before the notorious, evil red- light cameras started snapping drivers with violations……

  7. I was watching tv and the talk show hosts were talking about Melania Trump’s decorating of the White House with the Christmas decorations that she selected, and had done up. They were really picking on her, I have to admit, and saying that she couldn’t even do that right. I mean it was catty, really. I liked what they showed she had done. It was lots and lots of big vases down each side with an aisle down the middle, and the vases had big tall bare sticks with white icy looking glitter and a frosty looking cold theme in some shades of black and white and frosty looking colors. I liked it, but when they compared hers with the traditional red bows, and greenery photos, it did look a little cold and bare, but I think she was after something modern and sleek….oh well, I liked Melania’s Christmas decorating better than Ivanka’s Thanksgiving centerpiece decorating of the big giant natural clam shell on the table, with the mini white pumpkins and whatever else she had threw in that thing.

  8. My husband keeps telling me about a guy named Scott Frost that coaches UCF and is leaving, and going to coach for Nebraska, where he played before, and he keeps telling me about some football plays, ha ha that doesn’t mean a hill of beans to me, and he keeps telling me over and over about Armwood High School……and that they are in the championship again…….duh, like I care?????? I told my husband maybe the fans can sit in the stands at AHS, and not get eaten by the mosquitoes, since they sprayed, and can watch the football games without getting eaten alive, and he said,” there are no more football games this year over at the AHS….and I was really??? I just don’t know this football stuff, or even care, but I do like to see our town win, and I had really hoped Wekiva Mustangs would win the championship, and AHS too, but maybe next year…….

  9. Basically the extent of my football questions are where is Chuckie now? Where is that coach that used to coach UCF that his last name started with a K? Where is Steve Spurrier now? Pathetic, I know…….

  10. They have some very interesting game shows out of Mexico….we get those pretty clear all the time here on free tv… They got some wild ones down there on tv in Mexico, on those game shows….!

  11. Tomorrow former Congress woman, Corrine Brown, will be sentenced. While there are those who want her put away for life, I am not one of those people, and I do hope they will go lenient on her. Her attorney is asking for probation only, with no prison time. So we will wait and see what goes tomorrow for Corrine…..I would not want to be in her shoes, because sentencing is so different, for different people, and one can’t assume how it will go…….

  12. I was reading this case on the internet about this guy who got a parking ticket, and he went to pay the ticket at the court in Royal Oak, Mich. Once at the counter, he got out his credit card to pay the ticket which was only $ 10.00, and the court officers told him that there would be a surcharge of an additional $ 1.75 making the charge a total of $ 11.75 total for using the credit card. The guy said, no way, and he left. He was mad, and came back to the court counter with $ 10.00 in rolled up pennies this time, to pay the parking ticket, and the court officer told him that they would not accept the rolled pennies as payment. Then the guy was outraged and started arguing, and they told him to leave, and so the guy did start leaving, and had even got through the set of glass doors to the next exit set of glass doors, and here came the two court officers and grabbed the guy around the neck, with his back turned to them, and started choking him down until he was unconscious, but not before he defecated all over himself. Then he was arrested and hauled to jail, and had to bond out, and now he has a big time lawsuit against the court and the court officers, as it was recorded on video inside the court, and he was complying and leaving as they jumped him….it is on the internet, if you want to watch it……..wow!
